Don't load up on movies every time cold weather comes to town. "Just because it's snowing, doesn't mean kids can't go out, build a snowman, have a snowball fight or build a fort," says Cindy Gellner, MD, a pediatrician at Ï㽶ÊÓƵ of Utah Health. Have a healthy mix of indoor and outdoor activities for kids so they get 60 minutes of exercise per day.
Rather than watching TV, challenge kids to a dance-off or host an indoor bowling tournament. It's fun for the whole family, and the kids won't even know they're getting exercise. "Another option: Local recreation centers offer indoor swimming, basketball courts and even ice-skating for a small fee," Gellner says. Or try these four activities that kids can do at home.
Screen-Time Challenge for Kids
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends limiting screen time for children and teens to two hours max each day. Time quickly adds up, especially during colder months when kids are inside. Learn about the benefits of less screen time and download a form to help your child keep track.
