Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) is proud to recognize Jonathan Martinez and Stella Mason as two of the eight recipients. This prestigious award recognizes superior service and ongoing contributions by full-time staff.
Jonathan Martinez, Visual Communications Specialist
Jonathan received his undergraduate degree in journalism from the Ï㽶ÊÓƵ of Utah. His passion for storytelling, both through photography and video, has helped him collaborate with many on his HCI Communications team to produce content that captures people’s diverse experiences with cancer. In 2019, Jonathan presented Talks with Docs, a burgeoning video series he spearheads, at the Mayo Clinic Social Media Network Conference.
Jonathan was nominated by Don Ayer, PhD, senior director of cancer training and career enhancement, Neli Ulrich, PhD, executive director of comprehensive cancer center, Thomas Varghese, MS, executive medical director (interim) and chief value officer, and Meredith Vehar, MPA, associate director of communications.

Stella grew up in Sandy, Utah. She now lives in Holladay with her husband and two cats. Stella married her high school sweetheart in 2017. She is finishing up nursing prerequisites and stays busy with work and school. In her free time, she likes to watch crime documentaries and listen to podcasts. She thoroughly enjoys working as a pharmacy technician at the HCI retail pharmacy and takes pride in helping her patients.
Stella was nominated by pharmacy manager Nathan Wilson and pharmacists Breanne Loosle, Damien Powers, Kathy Phan, and Leslee Ash.
Normally the recipients of the Staff Excellence Awards are honored at a luncheon. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the luncheon was cancelled. In lieu of the luncheon, HCI CEO Mary Beckerle visited with Jonathan and Stella via Zoom to congratulate and celebrate them.
