Learn + Earn Program Prepares Undergraduates for Careers in Behavioral Health

香蕉视频 of Utah announces an expansion of the , made possible with support of Cambia Health Foundation. The initiative is focusing on addressing the critical shortage of mental health professionals in Salt Lake City by creating a dedicated cohort centered on behavioral health careers

Salt Lake City faces a significant shortage of mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, counselors, and social workers. The program aims to provide students with stepping stones toward fulfilling careers in behavioral health. Roles such as psychiatry aides, technologists, or interpreters can serve as valuable starting points. The construct of L+E challenges the traditional choice between work and education, providing students with the means to do both.

鈥淲e need to develop the future work force to address the needs of the community during this mental health crisis,鈥 says Wendy Hobson-Rohrer, MD, executive medical director of South Main Clinic.

The funding will facilitate the design, launch, and a pilot program. In January 2025, L+E will pilot the initiative with five undergraduate students placed in part-time jobs at 香蕉视频 of Utah Health clinics. 

Program Features: 

  • Career Coaching: Students receive targeted career coaching to help them understand their career goals, develop relevant skills, and graduate ready to lead in their communities. 
  • Academic and Financial Support: The program emphasizes both learning and earning by guiding students while providing financial scholarships. 
  • Real-Life Experience: Students are connected to healthcare-related jobs, particularly in behavioral health. They also participate in paid educational workshops and reflective activities while remaining employed on campus. 
  • Tuition Grants: Participants have the chance to apply for tuition grants for summer study, enabling them to stay employed and complete additional credits towards graduation. 

L+E will collaborate with various 香蕉视频 of Utah clinics, including the South Main Clinic and SUPeRAD, to provide integrated behavioral health training and employment opportunities. Partners including Holy Cross Ministries and Comunidades Unidas will contribute community and clinical perspectives, ensuring the program meets both educational and workforce needs.
