What Is Urology Surgery?

Urology surgeries are procedures that treat your urinary or reproductive system. Urologic surgeons may operate on several parts of your body:

  • Female reproductive system, including the vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, or fallopian tubes

  • Male reproductive system, including the penis, scrotum, testicles, and prostate

  • Urinary system, which includes the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra

There are many reasons to have urology surgery. For example, your surgeon may operate to remove kidney stones, treat infertility, or manage urinary incontinence.

Urologic surgeons treat patients of all sexes and ages. At Ï㽶ÊÓƵ of Utah Health, our urologic surgeons offer open, minimally invasive, and robotic urology surgery. We use the surgical approach that’s best for your condition.

What Is Reconstructive Urology Surgery?

Reconstructive urology surgery is a type of urology surgery. Surgeons rebuild or repair your urinary or reproductive systems with these procedures. For example, you may need reconstructive urology surgery to rebuild part of your urinary or reproductive system after cancer or a traumatic injury. These surgeries can restore function and improve your quality of life.

How to Prepare for Urology Surgery

The way you prepare for your urology surgery can change significantly depending on the type of surgery you have. Your surgical team members will tell you if you need to do anything special beforehand. They will tell you if you need to stop taking certain medications, such as blood thinners. You will also need to stop eating or drinking after midnight on the day of surgery.

You likely won’t be able to drive yourself home after your procedure. Please arrange for transportation.

Recovery from Urology Surgery

Your recovery time after urology surgery depends on the procedure you have. Your surgeon will explain what to expect and how to care for yourself during recovery.

Urology Surgery Complications

Our urologic surgeons are experts who reduce the risk of complications or side effects of urologic surgery as much as possible. Still, all urologic surgeries may have some risks:

  • Infection

  • Numbness

  • Pain

  • Poor wound healing or wound separation

  • Urinary incontinence

How Much Does Urology Surgery Cost?

The cost of urology surgery depends on your insurance plan, the type of procedure, and other factors. Our team will check your insurance coverage. You’ll know what to expect before your appointment.
